Persistence // The house where Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu lives allows a museum to be built, which will delight all visitors with the work of the most famous couple of plastic artists

Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu formed a formidable couple with plastic artist Glebus Sainciuc, who died three years ago. Together they raised their only son, Lică Sainciuc, who also became a prominent painter.

„I always see it coming”

The two artists - Glebus Sainciuc, born in 1919, and Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu, born two years later, met at a painting school, and after 5-6 years they got married.

„The main thing is that we are very different and in this way we complemented each other”, the artist said three years ago in the last interview given by the painters after 64 years spent together.

„If people have lived with each other long enough, they know each other from different points of view,” the painter also said, when she was still with the enthusiastic mask creator.

With a smile on her face, but with sad eyes, Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu examines each visitor to the exhibition, as if trying to recognize him. „My lady,” her husband used to call her tenderly. The painter admits that she misses him every day.

„Before October 28, when it was my birthday, it was such a beautiful time and it was as if I always saw Glebus coming here,” says the artist with emotion.

Counterbalance

Glebus Sainciuc valued his wife enormously. Every time he said that, although he is more famous, Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu is a bigger and more talented artist. „She was a counterbalance to Glebus Sainciuc, who was always present in society, active, but she sat in her solitude, in her isolation, and there she communicated with the gods”, believes the writer Vladimir Beșleăgă, present at the event.

With his characteristic modesty, Lică Sainciuc says that his mother's work inspired him. „There were three artists in the house, but they didn't mess me up, and that's good. Everyone deals with his art. We were different, as if there were no inter-influences”, emphasizes Lică Sainciuc.

Over time, numerous guests entered the artists' house, for whom Glebus Sainciuc drew portraits. No one left the house without a portrait.

The artist with verticality

Several members of Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu's family drew, such as uncle Pavel and older brother Victor. The artist studied drawing in the class of Alexandru Plămădeala.

In 1942, Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu became a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Iasi (study class of Professor Cosmovici). But after two years he returns to Chisinau due to historical circumstances, he resumes his studies at the School of Arts "I. Repin”, the current College of Fine Arts „Alexandru Plămădeala”.

Although the times were difficult, the painter was very faithful to her vocation. „She hasn't changed her style. There were so many plastic artists who went through the ordeal of ideology, changed their visions, adapted to the times, gave in, but Valentina is the only one who did not deviate from her vocation”, Vladimir Beșleăgă tells us.

House and Museum

„Girl in red”, „Quotations from the history of art”, „Breakfast”, „The rapture of Europe”, but also portraits of prominent personalities in the field of culture.

„It would be good if, when the painter turns 101, we have her complete work in all libraries in the Republic of Moldova, but also in the world”, mentions the art critic, Tudor Braga, who also believes that the location of the house where she lives the artist allows a museum to be built, which will delight all visitors with the work of the most famous couple of plastic artists - Glebus Sainciuc and Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu.

Although the article was written in November 2016 for November 2016 for Ziarul Național, it has value thanks to the two masters in the culture of the Republic of Moldova.
