For the first time, a village from the Republic of Moldova, laureate of the title of the best rural tourist destination in the world

The village of Văleni in Cahul district received today, October 19, the "Best Tourism Villages" 2023 edition distinction, during the 25th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). In the international competition in Uzbekistan, 260 localities from 60 countries signed up, writes the Ministry of Culture in a press release issued.

The selection was based on an assessment of resources and initiatives in nine areas covering the three pillars of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental.

At the ceremony, the Republic of Moldova was represented by the Minister of Culture, Sergiu Prodan, and Silvia Știrbeț, the author of the tourism development plan for the village of Văleni.


„This award honors us, being proof of the great tourist potential that our country has. (...) The recognition of the village of Văleni at this prestigious contest supports the authenticity, traditions and hospitality of local communities and boosts the development of rural tourism in our country”, said Minister Sergiu Prodan.


The village of Văleni stood out internationally also through the participation of the grandmother from Văleni, together with „Zdob si Zdub”, in the „Eurovision” Contest in 2006.
