Here's what Christians should do on the day of the Holy Great Martyr Pantelimon!

Today, Orthodox Christians in the Republic of Moldova celebrate the Holy Great Martyr Pantelimon, also known as "Pintilie the Traveler", informs Curentul. Requested by our reporter, Maxim Melinti, parish priest at the Ghidighici church, told us what is specific to this holiday and what Christians should do.

"On this day, divine services take place in all Orthodox churches, in particular, according to tradition, one of the seven sacraments is performed, the Sacrament of Holy Unction, the service that involves anointing Christians for the healing of the soul and body, for the forgiveness of sins. Obviously, on this day, Christians should come to church to pray to the good God for salvation and to receive this holy sacrament, that is, anointing with holy oil", said the priest.

In the people, St. Panteleimon is also called “Pintilie” or “Pintilie the Traveler”. In the past, this day was celebrated by those who traveled often. It was believed that the one who worked on this day “traveled”, that is, died not long after. In connection with the name of the holiday “Pintilie the Traveler”, there is a widespread belief that from Pintilie the Traveler “one travels in the summer”. This “travel” of summer is signaled by several events, such as the departure of migratory birds to warm countries, the “paleness” of leaves.

It was once believed that on “Pintilie the Traveler” summer separates from autumn. Hence the expression “summer goes like bread, winter comes like a dog”. Pintilie the Traveler protects cattle and people from many diseases.

Saint Panteleimon was born in Nicodia and lived in the 3rd-4th centuries after Christ. Pantelimon, whose name means "all-merciful," dedicated his life to serving the suffering and humble. For his faith, he was beheaded by pagan doctors.
