Moldova is the number one in the world with the highest density of vineyards

Today, the wines of the Republic of Moldova represent over one hundred wine units, where more than twenty thousand people are employed. Wines are in the top three most exported products, accounting for 5% of the country's total exports.
Moldova has 1.8% of the global vine area and is ranked 19th in the world in terms of wine production and export. Moldova is the number one in the world with the highest density of vineyards per capita, but also concerning the total area of agricultural land.

Moldovan wines are gradually becoming an element of identity and cohesion, says Andrian Digolean, a marketing expert at the National Office of Vine and Wine. Wine represents 3% of GDP. 15-20 years ago, in the Republic of Moldova, quality wine existed „in homoeopathic quantities”, and the first embargo imposed by the Russian Federation, in 2006, motivated those in the field to align themselves, step by step, with the world's major producers. Until the embargo, Moldova did not know the expression „market diversification”, and today it has exported almost 60 million bottles of wine annually to more than 60 countries. These are quality wines, which express the authenticity and typicality of the region, they can no longer be reproduced by anyone or anywhere. In 2019 alone, Moldovan wines were chosen with over 700 medals at 19 international competitions.

Every year, 33 billion bottles of wine are consumed in the world. The competition is fierce, and the producer must find a way to persuade the consumer to choose his wine from the thousands of labels in the big networks. Drinking a glass of wine at the table means having a little more controlled contact with alcohol, as opposed to spirits and beer. The National Office of Vine and Wine was created to assume this intermediate role and, together with the producers, to capitalize on the national treasure – „Wine of Moldova. A living legend”, mentions Andrian Digolean.

From quantity to quality
Wines from the Republic of Moldova are the result of work in the wine sector. In recent years, the trend has changed from bulk, mass and bulk exported wines to quality, bottled wines.

„The change was radical, from Soviet Moldovan wine – to a world-class wine that can compete directly with any wine product, internationally,” says Mihai Druta, president of the Sommelier Association of Moldova.

The colour, aroma and taste of the wine have changed. The most advanced technologies and new processes are used. The emphasis is on quality, starting with growing grapes and ending with certification standards. Mihai Druţă states that to have sustainable results, a lasting and quality promotion is needed, it is necessary to promote a wine culture, which combines several fields: tourist, cultural, economic, etc.

What Moldovan wines have achieved today is due to those who work in the field, and the effort was not in vain and the results are well deserved.

Certainly more can be done to make winemaking a more attractive field, but this can only be done through unity. The wine of Moldova was and is a symbol of the country, a business card, and we can all become ambassadors of this symbol of our country, considers Mihai Druţă.

If in 2016 we counted almost 200 medals, in 2019 we already have 780.

Diana Lazăr, Deputy Director of the Competitiveness Project of the Republic of Moldova, member of the working group for the reform of the wine sector, states that Moldovan wines represent the values to which the wine branch is today. It is about quality, millennial heritage and aspiration towards a prosperous future, to be capitalized on by future generations in a spirit of pride, dignity and respect. According to Diana Lazăr, the wine industry in the Republic of Moldova has suffered many shocks, which have severely affected the economic balance of the chain, especially the embargoes imposed by Russia in 2006 and 2013.

Then the winemakers from the Republic of Moldova understood how unprepared they were at that stage to reorient themselves in new markets and new quality segments. The tests have led to the fact that in the last five years the diversity of wine brands is visible on both the internal and the external market, being launched the first wines with a protected geographical indication.
