An educational and historical project will take place in Moldova and Germany: What is it all about

The educational and historical project "Present - Past: Culture and politics of commemoration of the "forgotten" victims of National Socialism 1933 - 1945" will take place in Germany and Moldova in the period July 2024 - April 2025.

The executive director of the KONTAKT association in Berlin, Ragna Vogel, who organized the project, told the special correspondent of the Infotag.md agency in Berlin that in Germany "we are primarily talking about former Soviet prisoners of war - more than 60% of whom died in the German captivity due to hunger, disease and abuse - as well as about the missing Bessarabian Germans, who were killed by euthanasia after being relocated from Bessarabia in 1940," reports Știri.md.

"In the Republic of Moldova, both the Roma and the disappeared Bessarabian Germans, as well as the Jews, are hardly represented in the contemporary discourse of memory. Here we are primarily talking about the "forgotten" Holocaust in the Transnistrian region," said Vogel.

According to Vogel, students and graduates from the Republic of Moldova and Germany will work together for two semesters, accompanied by translators from German to Romanian.

"We will spend a face-to-face project week in Berlin/Brandenburg and one in Chisinau/Balti. Meetings with experts, excursions, masterclasses, visits to museums, memorials, etc. are planned. The association will bear all expenses related to the program, accommodation in single hotel rooms, meals and flight expenses (Chisinau-Berlin and return)", said the executive director.

The project partner is the Association of Geography and Ethnology from the Republic of Moldova, headed by Dr. Dorin Lozovanu. The project is financed by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany within the Eastern Partnership and Russia program.
