Soroca district is appreciated for tourist attractions from here, both for the very popular ones and the ones known and visited by fewer tourists. Local newspaper Observatorul de Nord (The North Observatory) made a top of the most important tourist attractions which deserve to be visited by all guests who come here.
Soroca Fortress
The tourist attraction most known and visited, of course, is the medieval fortress, especially after it was restored due to a cross-border project funded by the European Union. The fortress is the symbol of land and our business card, which more than five-century guard the historical border of the country. It is not known for sure the year when this fortress was erected on the banks of the river Dniester, but the most widespread versions are from the time of Stephen the Great, and there are even opinions that it would be even older.
The small convent cave „Peștera Bechir” (The Cave Bechir)
On the winding road from the entrance of town Soroca, from town Chișinău, on the white wall, a very old Christian church can be seen, with an interesting history. It is believed to be over a millennium old, being in the period when the altars when the altars were facing north. Inside it is still preserved traces of iconostasis carved in chalk. Bechir's name was later acquired when in its interior refuged a man if we are to believe the local legends wear this name.
The Candle of Gratitude
On 27th March 2004 at Soroca was inaugurated the Turistic Cultural Complex „The Candle of Gratitude”. Initially, the monument was to be called „Badea Mior”, the idea was to propose by the writer Ion Druță, a native of Câmpia Sorocii. This touristic destination with a height close to 30 meters and was built based on the project of the architect Ion Pascal. Most attract the place itself, where it is opened a beautiful panorama over Soroca and the surrounding view. Although many come here by car on the way from the village of Zastânca, there are also the brave ones who choose to climb the more than 600 steps to the Candle of Gratitude.
The cave of deads
Underneath the cemetery of Rudi village is hidden „The cave of deads”, a grotto by natural origin about 75 meters long. The cave was dug by waters in the Saracen rock, and the villagers believe that it is much longer and could reach the Dniester. For exploring the care under the cemetery of the village, take with you a take a flashlight with you, because the light from the mobile phones, is too much weak to scour the cave. The entrence is to the left of the cemetery, in a ravine that you have to do only in the knees. Those who suffer by Claustrophobia or have back pain, we do not recommend them to go too deep, especially since in some areas you can only go bent. The „The cave of deads” received this strange name, because it was dug under the tombs, and is a good training place for those who want to explore more difficult ones, such as „Surprise Cave” or „Emil Racoviță”.
Peak from Cremenciug
Above the village Cremenciug rises a rock of all beauty, baptized by the locals „Ţiglău” (Peak), but and by researchers „Colina Casca” (Hillock Helmet). The rock from the estate of the village has an altitude by 100 meters above the river Nistru and it is a place of rest for the natives, but for guests too. There are at least three access routes to the top of the rock: one is from the suburb of the freeholder, above of the Valley of spring (Valea Izvoarelor), another one through forests and the other one from Sobari. Although the slope is not a piece of cake, how it looks at the beginning of the road, instead the panorama seen from the tops of the rock is worth the effort. Even in winter, the green color prevail thanks to coniferous and moss that appear everywhere. The whole trip to the rocky rock, to be in the middle of nature, but also the descent is an unforgettable adventure for many.
The monastery Rudi
At the exit of the village of Rudi, a country road takes you in the middle of the forest, to the place where more than two centuries ago a sketch was erected. And the closer you get to the Rudi Monastery, you will find a different world than the one with which we have become accustomed, without the typical „flaw” of civilization. Here everything is surrounded by peace, and only the birds of the forest remind us through their song that we are in the bosom of nature. The monastery was established during the reign of Grigore Ghica Voda, with the kindness of the brothers Teodor and Andronache Rudea (Rudi). The stone church with the dedication „Sf. Trinity” is the only object preserved since its inception and was built between 1770-1777, in the old Moldovan style.
The monastery from chalk from the village Cosăuți
One of the lesser-known tourist attractions in Soroca can be found on the estate of Cosăuţi village, on the right bank of the river Dniester, more than a kilometer and a half above the well-known monastery with the dedication of „Covering the Virgin Mary”, which we also recommend you to visit. The „Monastery in Crete” or „Monastery of Pintilei”, as they are also told by the locals, is hidden in a rock in the forest and you can hardly give it. The monastery is over 100 meters above the Dniester and can not be seen by the free eye by those who walk along the river, but says that it is well seen from the Dniester and from the other side when the vegetation leaves its leaves. The cliff dug in the rock has an irregular shape, a sleeping niche, two windows, and a door to which you have to climb the steps dug in the rock. Its age is not yet known, but it has certainly been centuries since it was excavated.
Soroca Museum of History and Ethnography
This institution is of interest to both locals and Soroca guests. The Museum of History and Ethnography of Soroca hosts both permanent and temporary exhibitions, with collection pieces, photographs and other unique works of other museums in the republic. The basic exhibition is made up of hundreds of exhibits, some of which hide the unique stories told by the museum's collaborators, such as the milling brush, the straw basket from Băxani, the mill from the mill, the Cozma Pşenicnii from Septelici and many others.
Wooden Maramures Church
The wooden church in Soroca is unique in this region, being built in the Maramures style. The holy place with the dedication „Holy Martyrs Brancoveni” is near the river Dniester (in romanian: Nistru) and was given to the Sorocians by the Romanian leadership. The church was built between 2011-2012, has a height of 25 meters and is covered with wooden shingles. The place belongs to the Metropolitan Church of Bessarabia and is not only a spiritual center, but also a cultural one, the parishioners gather here on both holidays, religious holidays and national holidays.
Gypsies neighborhood
The gypsies neighborhood of Sorocii hill is especially popular among foreign tourists who come to Soroca. They are fascinated by the palaces erected here and by their tenants, who are increasingly open in recent years to tourists. The Roma neighborhood is unique especially because the history of this ethnic group is related to the legendary four who wandered the world. And here, in Soroca, instead of the traditional four, the castles were erected, some beautiful, but just as impressive. Also on Sorocii Hill can be visited copies of famous buildings such as the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and the Washington Capitol. For a few lei, although any popular currency is acceptable, you can „read” the future in the palm of your hand or find out what the fate books predict.
